Even More Connections
I'm interested in a lot of things, so we have many possibilities for connecting. Here are a few, just for starters:
Food: I love to eat. Some types of ethnic food that I particularly like are Japanese (sushi, sashimi, shabu shabu, nabemono), Korean (kimchi chigae, bebimbop, mandu, bulgogi), Rusyn (perohy, halupki, makovnik, blinchiki, borscht, blini, baklazhanaya ikra), Arabic (khubz with zaatar, shawarma, hommus, kibbeh [both baked and raw], falafel, sfiha, tabbouleh), Mexican (ensalada de nopalitos, churros, posole, menudo, flautas, empanaditas, champurrado), Greek (spanakopita, keftethes, dolmades, avgolemono soup, galaktobouriko, baklava) . . . .
Music: When I was younger, I listened mostly to classical music. Now my musical tastes are much broader (though I don't like heavy metal or really loud pop music). Favorite classical composers include Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven, Moussorgsky, Orff, Kodaly, Rakhmaninoff, Glinka. I also like folk music from almost anywhere . . . .
Education and Teaching/Learning: In language teaching, I'm a staunch believer in teaching what students actually need and in helping students learn to use a language, not merely to acquire esoteric knowledge about it. I'm also committed to co-teaching and co-learning. At the same time, I also believe that some teacher-directed activities have merit, and that some "old-fashioned" techniques (like oral drilling) still have a place . . . .
World Cultures: I'm fascinated by cultural similarities and differences in all kinds of areas—for example, in paralinguistics as well as language, in different ideas of "normal" vs "weird" foods, in diverse ways of celebrating life stages and holidays . . . .
This is enough for now, I think. If need be, I'll add more later.

Dennis, I love eating out and my favorite types of food are Japanese and Italian. I don´t like to try new things. That´s a flaw, I admit, I like to eat what I already know is good. I´m also interested in everything related to education. I don´t listen to classical music though. However I like the oldies, I love Elvis Presley and Fank Sinatra and anything that sounds like them.
Ooops, just for the record, I meant Frank Sinatra.
Oí, Cleide.
How nice it is to see your comments! Many thanks!
I'm glad we both like Japanese and Italian food. If you like Japanese food, you'd probably also like Korean food—in particular, bibimbap.
What's your favorite Italian food? — I particularly like eggplant parmesan and gnocchi.
I can tell, from things you've written elsewhere, that you're interested in everything related to education. That area alone provides enough reading material to last several lifetimes, right?
At one time, as I mentioned in this post, I listened primarily to classical music. I was, in fact, a musical snob: if it wasn't classical, I thought, it wasn't worth listening to! Now (as I also mentioned), my musical taste is much broader. I like Elvis Presley (or at least many of the things he sang), too, and I never get tired of listening to Frank Sinatra: his genius at interpretation and phrasing are, in my opinion, matched only by Barbra Streisand, among the more modern singers.
I'm glad that you put your comments in this section of "Connections" instead of in the Welcome section! I'm also glad—delighted, actually—that we have this additional way to connect!
Abraços—
Dennis
It´s been great to interact with you. Having this first blog, posting stuff and reading people´s comments on it have made me think a lot about the process and how profitable it is for me as an educator.
Eita!!! (Ooops) Only now I realize I forgot to answer your question. About what Italian dish I specifically like. I have to admit that I´m not very good at names, I just know what the food tastes like and that´s enough for me,rsrsrs. Well, I know a few... ok, I like spaghetti very much and of course cheese pizza, I like simple pizzas toppings, you know, tomatoes, onions, cheese basically. I love Pizza Hut´s crust. OMG, I could talk endlessly about the foods I like. That´s my favorite conversation topic EVER!!!! Well, that´s it. Hope to hear from you again. Bye.Abraços for you too.
Hi again, Cleide.
It's been great to interact with you, too, and I agree that making blogposts and then reading people's comments and reactions is definitely profitable for educators—and also other types of people, I guess. My contact, on blogs, has almost 100% been with educators, though.
Re Italian food, I also like spaghetti and pizza.
I made spaghetti for dinner a couple of nights ago. Although I can make a pretty good spaghetti sauce "from scratch," the recent sauce was only "semi-homemade": I used a jar of sauce from the supermarket but added onions, green and red peppers, mushrooms, parsley, garlic powder, pepper and ground beef to it. It tasted pretty good!
Normally, I also like simple pizzas with simple toppings, but sometimes I like toppings that are a little unusual—like bacon and pineapple.
I guess food is my favorite conversation topic, too!
I've had very little traditional Brazilian food, but I've read descriptions of paõ de queijo, brigadeiros, feijoada, pamonhas, and meat cooked churrasco-style. There are Brazilian restaurants in Phoenix, but they aren't located very close to where I live, so it's doubtful that I'll visit any.
I look forward to our next conversation!
com mais abraços—
Dennis
